You no longer understand your partner.
You and your partner have had poor communication lately, so you don’t understand what their needs are and they don’t understand yours.
Because communication has broken down, there’s a lack of validation and love. Both of you have grown frustrated with each other.
Things that really don’t matter keep you distracted and keep you from building up your love and understanding for one another.
Each of you seems to be focused on your own self-interest while your relationship falls apart.
It’s about the relationship, not the individual.
Understand that the client, in couples therapy, is the relationship. This is a big change from Individual sessions, which focus on the individual and the individual’s needs.
In couples counseling, we look at improving the relationship, not the individual.
Both of you have already made choices to be together, made sacrifices, and served each other in the relationship. Keep that going.
It’s not always easy.
Relationships are difficult because you must be honest about vulnerable emotions with your partner.
In a strong relationship, both partners look for ways to help the relationship.
You have to trust and support one another.
Your relationship is worth fighting for.
My first question to both parties is, “Do you really want to do the work?”
We will first work on improving your communication with one another.
You’ll learn how your partner feels validated. Once that happens, you will each be able to communicate your needs.
This will help foster closeness once again and affirm your care and love for each other.
